About Botox

What Are Neuromodulators; aka Botox?

Aging has a way of creeping up on us. It starts with faint smile creases, forehead lines, or crinkles at the corners of your eyes. Those wrinkles in your skin are a result of smiling, frowning, laughing, and squinting over the years; though smoking, sun damage, dehydration, as well as the effects of some medications can take a significant toll on your skin.

We can help to smooth those lines out, for both men and women, by addressing the root of the problem: your facial muscles.

By injecting a neuromodulator, Botox (botulinum toxin type A) beneath the surface of your skin, we can reduce the muscle contractions in your face, ultimately smoothing those creases and softening those lines, bringing back your youthful skin among many other benefits.

What Are Neuromodulators (Botox) And How Do They Work?

Botulinum toxin is a neuromodulator, which is the fancy name for a class of chemicals that interrupt the signals between nerves and muscles causing muscles to relax and wrinkles to subside. Injections of botulinum toxin temporarily inhibit the nerve cells that signal specific muscles to contract, therefore weakening facial movements that cause fine lines and wrinkles.

There are currently five neuomodulators available on the market today.

Botox®, or onabotulinumtoxinA, cleared for cosmetic use in 2002

Dysport®,or abobotulinumtoxinA, FDA-approved in 2009

XEOMIN®  or incobotulinumtoxinA, FDA approved in 2010

Jeuveau® or PrabotulinumtoxinA, FDA approved in 2019

and the newest, longest lasting one

Daxxify®  which was just approved in 2022.

The differences between all these options can be further discussed during your appointment.

Cosmetic use of these neuromodulators include softening the lines around the eyes, forehead, in between the eyebrows, around the nose, reduction of nasal flaring, reducing a gummy smile, lip lines, chin wrinkles, lip flips and neck bands.  They can also treat a variety of medical conditions including excessive underarm, foot or hand sweating, neck tension, rosacea and many more.

Are These Procedures Painful? How Long Does It Take?

Because neuromodulators are injected using fine needles, it causes minor discomfort, like a pinch. Some patients will experience tenderness near the injection sites. Typically, your face may feel taut and you may have some temporary redness and/or swelling for about 20 minutes. Overall, the  injections are quick, it only takes a few minutes.

How Soon Will I See Results?

With fairly no downtime results start to kick in as early as day three or four, though the full effects can take up to two weeks to appear and last anywhere from two to four months. To keep results going, maintenance appointments are recommended every three to four months.

What Happens If I Don’t Continue Treatment?

If you don’t continue treatment, your symptoms (whether you were treated for fine lines, wrinkles, excessive sweating or any other reason) will gradually return.

Are There Any Potential Side Effects From Botox Injections?

Temporary side effects may include sensitivity at the injection sites, dry mouth, eyebrow drop , eyelid drop, fatigue, headache, neck pain, vision problems, and dry eyes. Minor symptoms of an allergic reaction may include itchiness, rash, and welts, but if you experience wheezing, dizziness, or faintness, seek medical attention as soon as possible. For more information on possible side effects, speak with your healthcare provider. Neuromodulators are safe when administered by a knowledgeable, experienced healthcare provider.

Will I Still Be Able To Make Facial Expressions?

Although you will see visible results, a neuromodulator treatment will not radically change your facial appearance or make it appear like you have had “work done.” The muscle activity that causes wrinkles is temporarily reduced, but you will still be able to frown or look surprised.

Are Neuromodulators An Option for Men?

Men are becoming increasingly concerned about skincare and the physical appearance of their skin and neuromodulators are no exception.

What Is the Cost Of Neuromodulators?

Neuromodulators aren’t just for the rich and famous. Exact costs vary depending upon individual treatment plans. We’ll advise you of the costs for your treatment at your consultation.
